The Marble Model of an Electric Circuit has proved to be very popular over the past year, and teachers who have attended this workshop have praised it.

This desktop demonstration involves a ramp, to simulate the potential difference and the electric field running inside a conductor, some fixed obstacles, which represent the stationary atoms or ions that give a conductor its resistance, and some marbles, which represent the conduction electrons.

Many facets of a real electric circuit can be talked through with a class, with this demonstration being used to illuminate key concepts, from simply showing why the current is constant in a series circuit to more high-level thinking, such as the voltage being the energy given to each unit of charge by the battery.

At this free workshop you will build a marble circuit. You will then try your model out, and discuss how to use it to teach electric circuits with the other teachers attending. At the end of the session you will take home the model you built (again, for free!).
