You are invited to the annual Stimulating Physics East Midlands Network Day conference at Sir Jonathan North Community College, Leicester LE2 6FU on Saturday 29th September 2015 from 09.30am – 3.20pm. The whole day (including lunch and refreshments) will be FREE OF CHARGE to all those who attend, thanks to support from the Institute of Physics and Sir Jonathan North CC.

The conference features a keynote lecture ‘Bees and Physics’ by Dr Martin Bencsik of Nottingham Trent University. You also have the opportunity to choose from a busy programme of workshops, exploring ideas to use in your labs and classrooms for age 11 onwards, along with novel resources, cutting edge applications of Physics, and hands-on practicals. These will be run by IOP Physics Network Coordinators, SPN Teaching and Learning Coaches and other experienced presenters; the programme and workshop details are below.

All teachers of physics are welcome – including experienced teachers, those new to physics teaching, NQTs, technicians and trainees.

Delegates will have the opportunity to attend 3 of the workshops on offer. Please select your preferred options when booking.

A Make-and-Take: Particle Accelerator
The ‘accelerator bowl’ is a model of a particle accelerator that can be used to explain the workings of real machines like Diamond and the Large Hadron Collider. Although it’s a very simple model, by discussing the similarities and differences between this and a real accelerator we can understand a lot of the Physics involved in these intriguing machines.  You will also build a model of a linear accelerator which you can take away. B Make-and-Take Selection
Come and make some super simple stuff inspired by physics, and take away for immediate use in class. Discuss how you can use the equipment as demonstrations to illustrate principles in forces, electromagnetism and fields in a simple way, and yet challenge students of all ages. Equipment provided. C RAF100 Practical Activities
As part of this year’s centenary programme of the Royal Air Force, the Institute of Physics and the Historical Association have produced material for use in school lessons and clubs. You will be able to try all eight of the new STEM activities and discuss opportunities for stretch and enrichment to suit able KS3 or KS4/5 students. Student instructions, extension materials and teacher notes will be available to view. A whistle-stop tour of the on-line resources will help you to plan the best use of the materials to suit your school. Key Stages 3,4

D Meteorites – A Thinking Skills in Science Mini-Project
A chance to discuss a project, based on the principles of cognitive acceleration, designed to help develop pupils’ numerical and scientific reasoning skills in Physics. Resources will be provided for you to use in your school. Key Stage 3

E Modelling in Physics
In this session, we will illustrate how modelling can be used in science lessons. We’ll discuss how models can both help students with their misconceptions but, on some occasions, how they can reinforce misconceptions. We will look at lots of models for a range of physics topics, examine their strengths and weaknesses and how best to use them with your classes. We will give you a range of practical ideas that you can take back to the classroom and share with colleagues. Key Stages 3,4

F Physics and Maths
Alastair teaches Maths at KS3-5, and more recently has added A level Physics to his timetable. He has been raising awareness of what is taught in Maths classes by presenting his ideas to science teachers at IOP Lead School courses for several years. Today he will look at aspects of mathematical skills needed for KS4 physics, and ways we can help our students overcome some of the challenges they face. Key stages 3,4

G Using Smartphones in Physics lessons
This workshop will show you how to use a smartphone as a variety of sensors in practical work. In addition, producing QR codes to make resources more effective; using 3×3 links to make web quests more structured; quick and easy ways to produce Gifs to enhance learning; use of shorten URLs, and using iMovie to teach Physics.

H Workshop for CPD leaders (available only in workshop session 1)
If you teach children, and also lead cpd sessions for teachers of physics, you are most welcome to come to this workshop. We will take a topic, outline some activities that might be used in a session with teachers, and discuss alternatives/models/problems/strengths and means of presentation. An opportunity to meet other teacher/coaches.
