Good afternoon and Congratuations – you’re at the one-month mark!

The point of mentoring is to make your life easier, not harder, so this won’t be a long update. Hopefully you’re settling into your schools and will remember to give me a shout if there are any Physics issues I can help with. At the moment I don’t know which schools most of you are at, or even if you’re still in my ‘patch’, so please reply with those details if you can – it will only take a moment.

Although you may not feel like it, you’ve probably got your head around the resources in school. You probably noticed before I did that BBC Bitesize has updated the Science pages http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/physics/ to reflect the new specifications. I’d like to quickly recommend the audio files, which may not match your exam course exactly but are a great way to get kids thinking about key ideas: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/audio/science/

http://www.schoolphysics.co.uk is a free site with no sign-in required, and based on work from Keith Gibbs, author of the excellent book The Resourceful Physics Teacher. It includes resources, animations, worksheets and so on to make your life easier. The site is also useful for students to use themselves when revising and is divided by age group. Bookmark it for next time you’re planning a lesson and need something extra to slot in.

Finally, I’ve set up a TalkPhysics Group for Derbyshire Mentoring. This is a secure forum where you can ask and answer questions, and I can share resources I find as and when. I’ll save a copy of this email there too. You’ll have to sign up for TalkPhysics first (or dust off your username from last year) but then joining the group should be straightforward.
